Australian Death Notification Service: who it tells, and who it does not

For a death in New South Wales, Victoria or Queensland, this page lists who the free notifier reaches and who it does not, with the date each row was checked.

General information · not legal advice · not a law firm.

What the Australian Death Notification Service does

Australia · general information · checked 10 October 2026

The Australian Death Notification Service (ADNS) is a free, national service.

It is a NSW Government initiative. ADNS says it is supported by all states and territories.

It takes the details of the person who has died and sends them to the organisations you choose from its list.

A death certificate must have been issued before ADNS can be used.

ADNS says a notification takes 5 to 15 minutes.

Those organisations should make contact within 10 business days.

ADNS says it can be used by anyone with legal authority to administer the estate, and that they may be asked for documents showing it. It names executor, administrator and solicitor as examples of these roles.

The coverage map: who ADNS reaches and who it does not

Australia · general information · checked 10 October 2026

Organisations choose whether to join. ADNS says it cannot make them take part.

Australia · general information · checked 11 October 2026

The full list is on the ADNS participating organisations page.

ADNS showed the same list for a death in each of the three states. Below is a selection of large organisations. Most are national; a few are NSW bodies.

Each row says whether the organisation was on that list, and carries the date it was checked. "No" means only that: not on that list, on that date.

How to tell the organisations ADNS does not reach

Australia · general information · checked 10 October 2026

Each organisation not on the list is told separately, through its own route.

ADNS suggests forwarding its confirmation email to organisations not on the service. It says the email holds all the details already entered.

Check the details before you send. A notification cannot be changed after it is sent.

ADNS also lets anyone nominate an organisation to join.

Each organisation's own published route

Australia · general information · checked 11 October 2026

Each organisation the free notifier does not reach has its own published route, and this site shows those routes one card at a time, each as the organisation states it and dated.

Services Australia (Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support) and the Australian Taxation Office each publish a form and a time.

Services Australia says it needs to be told of a death within 28 days, in one of three ways: by calling the Older Australians line, by sending the Advice of death form, or at a service centre.

Banks and super funds each publish their own route too, and the free notifier reaches some banks and not others.
